Château Purcari is the oldest winery in Moldova, an Eastern European state that has made wine the fastest growing sector in the country. In particular, the area between the Prut and Dniester rivers, which largely corresponds to the historical region of Bessarabia, has been involved in viticulture and wine production since ancient times. Here is the village of Purcari, where about 200 years ago, with an official decree of Tsar Nicholas I Romanov, the homonymous winery was founded, destined to quickly become a symbol of Moldovan winemaking excellence in the world. Thus began the long history of Château Purcari, told by the thousands of labels preserved in the company’s historic cellar.
The first owners of the company were the Frenchman M. Betier and the German M. Harmizone who, in founding the winery, were inspired by the French castles of Bordeaux, a region with which the village of Purcari shares the same latitude, a characteristic that gives the wines produced here a marked similarity to the French ones. In the area around the village of Purcari, the soil is black, well-drained and clayey, rich in minerals and organic substances, which allows the roots of the vines to penetrate deep, thus creating favorable conditions for the cultivation of classic varieties.
Viticulture here is favored by a sunny climate with low rainfall and tempered by the influence of breezes from the Black Sea and the Dniester River which, due to their proximity, ensure climate stability, protecting the vines from both winter frosts and summer heat. This allows the grapes to ripen gradually, without harmful temperature variations, absorbing all the richness of the local soil. These unique characteristics have meant that the wines of Château Purcari were recognized and praised by experts in the sector as early as 1847 and 1878, on the occasion of the Purcari Agricultural Fair and the International Exhibition in Paris. For a long time, the wines produced by the company have been present on the tables of the most important royal families in Europe and are still appreciated today by the British Royal Family. Château Purcari wines continue to receive the highest prizes and awards in the most important international wine competitions and events, consolidating their position in the most exclusive markets. Tasting Château Purcari wines means coming into contact with the centuries-old history not only of a company, but of an entire territory, which has found its maximum expression in a product of excellence that transmits to the world the passion and expertise of generations of winemakers for their work and their love for their land.
